C.H.A.T. Helping The Community

Q: What is C.H.A.T. Of WNY all about?

A: C.H.A.T. (Community Helpers Around Town) of W.N.Y. was founded and incorporated in 2004. Our club has recently applied for and been accepted for 501© status as a non-profit organization. We are a charitable organization with membership open to the public. Our club generates funds by organizing fund raising events that are fun for everyone involved. Our membership is comprised of a diversified group of community minded people who are willing to contribute their time and effort and have fun while doing it.

Q: Who gets the money C.H.A.T. raises?

A: It is a C.H.A.T. club tradition to make our donations to local charities and other non-profit organizations. The club feels that local organizations are more in need of our help than nationally renown charities that receive major funding through corporate donors and such. Some of the charities C.H.A.T. has donated to are: Camp Special Place, run by the Town of Tonawanda parks and recreation dept. to send under privileged children to summer camp. The club has sponsored kids since 2005 and is currently sponsoring 8 children (2016. The club has also donated time and money to food pantries, collected clothing with the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina Relief, and donated to the local SPCA. The club has also worked closely with the Town of Tonawanda Police Club and their charitable endeavors , including “Toys For Tonawanda” Christmas toy drive. We have recently expanded our toy  drive to include Children’s Hospital.

One of our fondest beneficiaries is Brighton Place Library. The county closed this library and a group of volunteers took it over operating only on donations and a small membership fee. Besides an annual donation, our club recently donated computers and equipment, and the Library created the C.H.A.T. Tech Center at the library. The club has also created the Steven R. Hylkema scholarship fund. The C.H.A.T. Club awards this scholarship to one deserving student each year who meets a list of criteria set by the scholarship committee. The 2014 scholarship was in the amount of $500. The club voted to increase the scholarship to $1000 for 2015. The past two years the club has also donated time to manning the “Beer Station” at the annual Ronald McDonald House 5K race. In 2016 the club voted to donate $1000 annually in aviation fuel for WINGS Flights of Hope, which provides free flights for seriously ill patents and military personnel in need.

Q: How much time  and effort will I have to  commit to?

A: You can devote as much or as little as you want to! As we said, our club is comprised of a diversified group of people. It’s understood that people have families and work to deal with. Some members are retired and can devote more time than others. It would be enough just to come up with a new idea for a fun and profitable fund raiser. You don’t have to chair the event you suggest but you are welcome to chair / co-chair any event the club runs. It’s all about member involvement and having fun doing it.

Q: How much does it cost to join?

A: C.H.A.T. club dues are a very modest $20.00 per year for a single member and $30.00 for a family (Spouse / Significant Other)  membership. This entitles the member to our famous “Open Bar” at the monthly club meetings held at Caputi’s Sheridan Pub. All we ask is that you participate in the 50/50 raffle at each meeting to help defray the cost of the open bar to the club, and, if you win, you’re way ahead of the game!

Q: How do I join?

A: Very simple, just bring yourself to our meeting at Caputi’s Sheridan Pub  2351 Sheridan Dr. Tonawanda NY 14150 and sit in to see what we are all about. Then, just pay your dues and your in! The time and date of our meetings are posted on the home page of this web site.
